Campaign Launched in Support of Panama Canal Nomination to Prince of Asturias Awards

Date: 06-MAY-2013

Panama City, Panama, May 6, 2013 - The Panama Canal has launched a campaign to gain support for its nomination to the 2013 Prince of Asturias Awards under the International Cooperation category.

Those interested in joining the Panama Canal's nomination can:

  • Sign up in this website: http://micanaldepanama.com/awards/
  • Sign the signature books that will be located in the Miraflores and Gatun Visitors Centers, universities and other locations, which will be informed through social media.
The signatures of support will be sent to the jury of the Prince of Asturias Awards to show that the Panama Canal's nomination has international support.

The official nomination of the Panama Canal was presented by the Spanish Ambassador to Panama, Jesus Silva, in a letter to the President of the Prince of Asturias Foundation, Matias Rodriguez Inciarte on February 3, 2013.

This nomination coincides with the celebration this year of the Fifth Centennial of the European Discovery of the Pacific Ocean by Vasco Nunez de Balboa on September 25 and the upcoming celebration of the 100 years of the Panama Canal in August 2014.

Ambassador Silva wrote in his letter that the discovery of the Pacific Ocean has important historical significance and is recognized by Panama as the beginning of globalization and trade relations between Europe, America and Asia.

The winners will be presented with the Prince of Asturias Awards in October 2013.
