Transits and normal operations resume at the Panama Canal

Date: 09-DEC-2010

Panama City, December 9, 2010.

Transits and normal operations resumed at the Panama Canal early this morning after historic rainfall temporarily suspended traffic since noon yesterday.  "The temporary suspension was due to weather conditions in Panama City and along the Canal Watershed," said Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta. The Administrator explained these measures were taken to guarantee a safe transit through the waterway.

The Gatun and Alhajuela Lakes reached historic levels due to heavy rains on the Alhajuela watershed, which required the opening of the Gatun and Madden floodgates.
